Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed eight new bills into law on Wednesday, enacting legislation that addresses victim protections, judicial safety, and child welfare.
Among the newly signed laws is Senate File 2379, which expands protections for victims of sexual abuse and updates regulations regarding protective orders and the sex offender registry. Additionally, House File 523 grants peace officers the ability to file petitions for emergency protective orders on behalf of individuals seeking relief from domestic abuse.
The governor also approved Senate File 2280, a measure designed to enhance the safety of judicial and legislative professionals. This law authorizes certain officials to carry weapons and establishes criminal penalties for threatening or maliciously sharing the personal information of general assembly members, judicial officers, or their immediate families.
Other notable legislation includes House File 2256, which exempts a parent or legal guardian's inability to access appropriate behavioral or mental health treatment for their child from the legal definition of child abuse. The remaining bills address child endangerment, digital financial kiosks, student loan program information, and dental sedation permits.
