The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Maine has changed.
In a notice to customers, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting. It also said many customers may not need to visit an office at all, because a lot of business can be handled online.
The agency highlighted a range of services available through its website, including reviewing your latest Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.
People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision, according to the notice.
Account management tasks can be completed online as well, including changing your address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing your 1099.
The agency also pointed customers to its frequently asked questions and to online options for requesting a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.
The Social Security Administration encouraged customers to create a personal my Social Security account, describing it as a way to "Go Digital" and access benefits information.
