Fairfax County's Department of Family Services (DFS) is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance human connections by significantly reducing administrative paperwork. As one of the nation's pioneering human services agencies to adopt AI for this purpose, DFS aims to streamline operations and allow staff more time for direct client engagement.

The initiative requires client consent for AI usage, and all AI-generated notes and materials undergo thorough review by staff to ensure accuracy. Following a successful initial pilot program, the project has now been expanded to include an additional 150 staff members, indicating positive results and a commitment to broader implementation.

This expansion underscores Fairfax County's innovative approach to integrating technology within social services, with the goal of improving efficiency and focusing resources on direct client support. The continued rollout suggests a future where AI plays a larger role in administrative tasks, freeing up human professionals for more impactful interactions.
