NPR Books is reporting that one year ago Congress stripped away more than $1 billion in federal funding for public media. It said that despite the cut, the service did not go silent, and it credited listener support with keeping its programming on the air.
The newsletter, written by correspondent Andrew Limbong and introduced by Senior Society & Culture Editor Meghan Collins Sullivan, urged readers to donate to sustain the work. It said the support allows NPR to keep delivering programming that sparks curiosity and builds a more informed public.
Limbong also said the newsletter received a strong response from readers to its recent coverage of this year's literary prizes. He said the volume of emails, particularly from fans of author Elizabeth Strout, exceeded his expectations, and he invited readers to continue writing to the newsletter's inbox.
