The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Ohio has changed.

In a notice to customers, the agency directed Ohio residents to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before planning a visit.

The agency also reminded the public that many services can be handled online, saying, "You may not need to visit an office."

According to the notice, people can use their personal my Social Security account to review their latest statement and earnings history, estimate retirement benefits, and check the status of an application or appeal.

Benefits applications for retirement, disability and Medicare are also available online, along with the ability to appeal a medical decision.

Account holders can change their address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print their 1099 form through the online portal.

The agency said customers can also review its FAQs online and request replacement Medicare or Social Security cards without visiting an office.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to "Go Digital" and create a personal my Social Security account to access benefits information and services.
