The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revealed findings from an Office of Inspector General (OIG) report detailing political bias within FEMA during the Biden Administration, which resulted in some Florida households being denied disaster assistance after Hurricane Milton due to pro-Trump signage.
The OIG report, titled "FEMA Disaster Response Crew Violated Law and Policy by Skipping Homes with Political Signage," cited incidents FEMA had already investigated. Following an exhaustive inquiry by FEMA’s Office of Professional Responsibility in cooperation with DHS OIG, three additional individuals were terminated for failing to meet FEMA’s standards of conduct.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said, "The blatant abuse of power seen at FEMA under the Biden Administration was unacceptable, inhumane, and un-American." FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton added, "Under President Trump, political bias has no place at FEMA."
In response, FEMA has ceased FEMA-led door-to-door outreach efforts, instead providing support from fixed locations determined by state and local officials. This change, implemented under the Trump Administration, aims to ensure disaster aid is no longer politicized and all survivors receive equal access to assistance, especially after events like Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
