The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer for Jaime Santiago Corona, an illegal alien charged in a fatal car crash that killed a 6-year-old girl in Pitt County, North Carolina.
The crash occurred on July 3 when a truck, driven by Corona, ran a stop sign and struck an SUV carrying a mother and her two children. Six-year-old Calli Toler was pronounced dead at the scene, while her mother and 4-year-old sibling sustained serious injuries.
Corona, identified as a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, faces charges including death by vehicle, failure to stop for a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving while license is revoked. His criminal record includes convictions for driving under the influence of liquor and obstructing police.
Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis emphasized the preventable nature of the tragedy, stating, "This monster caused a car crash that killed a 6-year-old girl, and injured a mother and a 4-year-old." Bis added that Corona had been deported three times previously, in 2019, 2023, and 2024, and ICE's detainer seeks to prevent his release.
