The Social Security Administration (SSA) today transmitted its 2026 Annual Report of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program to the President and Congress, announcing significant service improvements under Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. These initiatives aim to reduce improper payments, increase accuracy, and provide better, faster, and higher-quality service for America's most vulnerable populations.
Key improvements include streamlining SSI policy instructions for increased transparency and deploying technology with call segmentation for enhanced customer service. The agency is also expanding the use of the Access to Financial Institution (AFI) tool to identify improper payments early and fully implementing the Payroll Information Exchange (PIE) to prevent overpayments through timely wage reporting, reducing recipient burden.
Commissioner Bisignano said, "Under President Trump’s leadership, we are protecting and strengthening Social Security for all Americans, including the nation’s most vulnerable. As part of this commitment, I renewed SSA’s focus on SSI over the last year." He added that an SSI Improvement office was established to transform service for recipients and supporting SSA employees.
For over 50 years, the SSI program has provided financial safety for more than seven million aged, blind, and disabled Americans with limited resources, helping them meet basic needs like food and shelter. The program is funded by general tax revenues.
