New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was denied access to Delaney Hall in Newark today, making her the first sitting Governor to visit the private detention facility. Governor Sherrill expressed serious concerns about the denial, stating it "raising serious questions about what they are trying to hide from public view."
The Governor reiterated her long-standing opposition to private detention facilities, advocating for Delaney Hall's closure and against any expansion of such facilities in New Jersey, including a proposed site in Roxbury. She met with families and advocates, describing their accounts as "heartbreaking."
Governor Sherrill pledged to continue holding ICE accountable and thanked the federal delegation, including Senator Kim and Representatives Menendez, Pou, McIver, and Mejia, who joined her. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding constitutional rights, ensuring humane conditions, and treating everyone within New Jersey's borders with basic dignity.
