Governor Kay Ivey and Alabama Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed announced Tuesday the launch of Alabama's Workforce Pell approval process, an initiative designed to make short-term, career-focused training more accessible to qualifying Alabamians. This program expands federal Pell Grant eligibility to approved short-term training programs that prepare individuals for high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand occupations, allowing students to gain valuable workforce credentials without enrolling in a traditional degree program.
Governor Ivey emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Alabama's workforce is one of our greatest strengths, and we must continue giving our citizens the tools they need to compete and succeed." She added that Workforce Pell will provide an affordable option for Alabamians to gain industry-relevant training and begin rewarding careers. Secretary Reed echoed this sentiment, noting, "Workforce Pell creates another pathway for Alabamians to gain the skills and credentials needed to compete for in-demand jobs."
The Alabama Department of Workforce will manage the state application and review process for institutions seeking program approval. Eligible programs must generally provide 8 to less than 15 weeks of instruction, include 150 to 599 clock hours, and prepare students for occupations on Alabama's In-Demand Occupations List. Programs must also lead to a recognized, portable credential, meet employer hiring requirements, demonstrate at least 70 percent completion and job placement rates, and have operated for at least 12 months.
Individual programs require both state and federal approval before students can receive funding. Once approved, qualifying students will apply for assistance by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Workforce Pell awards will be prorated based on the federal Pell Grant award, will not require repayment, and will count toward the federal lifetime Pell Grant limit. A directory of approved Alabama Workforce Pell programs will be published on the Alabama Department of Workforce website as approvals are issued.
