Newsweek is reporting that it is examining arguments against an economic collapse narrative, despite acknowledging public concerns over price pain and political criticism. It said the "doomer case" against the Trump economy is fueled by factors like the April inflation report, which showed consumer prices rose 3.8 percent over the previous year. The Democratic National Committee used this data to criticize President Donald Trump’s "failed economic agenda." However, Newsweek noted that "the strongest broad economic numbers point in a different direction," suggesting a counter-narrative to economic pessimism.
Separately, Newsweek announced the launch of two new newsletters. "China Decoded," led by World Editor Frances Mao, John Feng, and Deirdre Kirsten Tatlow, focuses on China’s growing global influence. The "Midterms Monitor," led by Daniel Orton and Alex Rouhandeh, will cover the 2026 midterm elections, which it describes as the first national test of President Donald Trump’s second term.
