Governor Kim Reynolds has requested a Presidential Disaster Declaration for four Iowa counties following severe weather, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding that occurred between July 1 and July 4, 2026. The declaration seeks federal assistance to help Jasper, Polk, Story, and Warren counties recover from an estimated $6.5 million in damages.
The request specifically targets funding under the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Public Assistance Program for the affected counties. Additionally, Governor Reynolds is seeking Hazard Mitigation Assistance funding for the entire state of Iowa.
A joint preliminary damage assessment by federal, state, and local officials confirmed the extensive damage. Funds from the Public Assistance program are intended for the restoration of damaged utilities, debris removal, and various emergency protective measures, including sheltering and providing essential supplies.
