Newsweek is reporting that President Donald Trump is giving "serious consideration" to renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America." It said that while the proposal could be seen as trolling, evidence suggests Trump genuinely intends to pursue it. The publication characterized this move as part of Trump's "working politics of symbolic sovereignty," aiming to demonstrate American primacy by treating the map as something the U.S. is entitled to rewrite. Newsweek noted that this action would also serve as a way to needle Canada while tariffs are in effect. It added that this would not be the first instance of Trump employing such an "imperial tool."
