Washington, DC is marking LGBTQIA+ History Month in October, with the Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs (MOLGBTQA) inviting residents to honor the people, places, movements, and milestones that have shaped the District's LGBTQIA+ community.
This year's celebration carries special significance as the District marks the 20th anniversary of the Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs, which was established to connect residents with services, advocate for LGBTQIA+ priorities, support community organizations, and bring residents together.
MOLGBTQA will host a 20th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, October 15, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Penn Social, 801 E St NW. The event will highlight community leaders, advocates, artists, and institutions who have advanced LGBTQIA+ progress in Washington, DC over the last two decades, with live entertainment and free refreshments.
One of the District's most iconic traditions also returns: the 39th Annual 17th Street High Heel Race, set for Tuesday, October 27, from 6:00 to 9:30 PM on 17th St NW between P and S streets. Organizers describe it as a night of drag performances and thousands of neighbors filling the street.
MOLGBTQA is also partnering with DC SAFE to present The Relationship Lab: A Healthy Relationships Series, a set of sessions exploring what makes relationships healthy and how to recognize the signs when they are not. The series runs Tuesdays, October 6, 13, and 20, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at 899 North Capitol St NE.
In a message from Director Carey, the office reflected on September's cultural heritage events, including the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs (MOLA) marking its 50th anniversary during Hispanic Heritage Month, the Mayor's Office on African Affairs (MOAA) commemorating African Heritage Month, and the Mayor's Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (MOAPIA) hosting its Mid-Autumn Festival & Night Market in Chinatown.
"Every heritage celebration reinforces a core value of the Bowser Administration: DC thrives because of the people who call it home, and our diversity is one of our greatest strengths," Carey said. "When we uplift each other's histories and traditions, we build a more inclusive and resilient District for all."
Looking ahead, the office said October includes meaningful milestones and signature events across its offices, offering residents another opportunity to come together, celebrate one another, and embrace our collective identity.
