Penguin Random House is reporting the upcoming publication of "We Shall Be Monsters," a new dark, lyrical fantasy novel by Alyssa Wees. It said the book is scheduled for release on Nov. 12, 2024, under its Del Rey imprint. The novel tells the story of Gemma Cassata, who lives with her mother in an isolated antiques shop in Michigan, near an enchanted gateway to fairyland. The plot involves Gemma venturing into the mysterious woods to rescue her mother, Virginia, after a witch takes her. Virginia had previously stolen Gemma's memories to protect her from a curse, having herself ignored warnings about the woods and suffered consequences. The story explores themes of vengeful witches, beastly fathers, and the complex bonds between children and parents, told through alternating viewpoints of Gemma and Virginia. "We Shall Be Monsters" will be available in paperback for $18.99, as an ebook, and as an audiobook read by Valerie Lohman and Zura Johnson. Wees is also the acclaimed author of "Nocturne" and "The Waking Forest."
