Mayor Muriel Bowser celebrated the close of Parks and Recreation Month with the ribbon cutting for the new Rosedale Recreation Center outdoor pool, marking a successful summer for Washington D.C.'s youth. "It's a beautiful pool for a beautiful community," Mayor Bowser said, highlighting the engagement of over 8,000 children in DPR summer camps and more than 15,000 teens employed through the MBSYEP program, alongside hundreds participating in the Career Ready Early Scholars Program and various DC Public Schools enrichment activities.

Over 230,000 people have visited the District's outdoor pools this summer. To further support community engagement, the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is expanding Friday and Saturday hours until 11:00 p.m. at four recreation centers: Deanwood, Emery Heights, Fort Stanton, and Turkey Thicket. Mayor Bowser also urged parents to combat "summer slide" by ensuring children read for 20 minutes daily.

In other community initiatives, the DC Public Library is partnering with Vision To Learn to offer limited free eye exams and glasses for children aged 3-18 through August, ahead of the new school year. Additionally, the American Red Cross said it is urgently seeking blood donors due to lower than usual summer donations. This call supports the District’s Prehospital Low-Titer O-Positive Whole Blood Program, a groundbreaking initiative launched in April 2024 by FEMS, which has administered over 530 units of whole blood to more than 490 patients, achieving a 93% survival rate among non-traumatic cardiac arrest patients.

The District is also gearing up to host the Mubadala DC Open tennis tournament at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center from July 25 to August 2, bringing top tennis talent to the city.
