Newsweek is reporting that President Donald Trump will personally greet Chinese President Xi Jinping when he arrives in the United States, a rare tarmac welcome by a U.S. president to another head of state. It said Xi is due to arrive Wednesday at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, outside Washington, D.C., where Trump is expected to meet him ahead of a highly anticipated White House meeting with trade, Taiwan and tariffs on the agenda. Newsweek said the appearance would be Xi's first public one since September 13. It noted that a sitting American president greeting a foreign head of state at the airport is a rare occurrence, citing past examples including President Dwight Eisenhower meeting Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1959, President John F. Kennedy meeting Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1961 and President Ronald Reagan meeting Pope John Paul II in 1987.

Newsweek also reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended his country as a "victim of terrorism" during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, as the chamber's lone U.S. delegate walked out of the hall. It said the White House fired back after the speech, calling Iran an "evil country."

It also reported that two students at the University of Mississippi have died, and that local authorities said kratom products were discovered in separate investigations into their deaths.

Newsweek additionally reported that Sen. Jon Ossoff has emerged as a Democratic favorite for 2028, with the question remaining whether he wants to run, and that a nationwide recall of pork, beef and goat products was issued under the highest warning level.
