The incident occurred on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at approximately 5:20 p.m., when crews responded to reports of a large column of black smoke from the facility located in the 9900 block of Furnace Road. Firefighters arrived to find a large storage facility containing commercial equipment fully engulfed in flames. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
Fire investigators are actively working to determine the cause of the blaze, while the Fairfax County Police Department is conducting a parallel criminal investigation. The USAR facility is vital for training the Fairfax County team, which is currently deployed to assist with recovery efforts following the devastating Venezuela earthquake.
