Newsweek is reporting that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the Russia-Ukraine war risks spreading to NATO's borders. In an exclusive interview with the outlet, Erdogan said Turkey does not disregard the risk of the conflict widening and called for restraint, saying allegations should be assessed on the basis of solid evidence and that steps that could further escalate tensions should be avoided. He said Turkey's priority is to prevent the war from drawing in other countries. Newsweek said Erdogan has positioned himself as a leading proponent of mediation as other NATO leaders push for harsher action against Russia, and that he said Turkey will not choose between east and west.

Newsweek also reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped the U.N. General Assembly to travel to Washington for a summit with President Donald Trump. It said Trump and first lady Melania Trump hosted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for a state dinner in the White House East Room, with more than 130 guests including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Apple Chairman Tim Cook, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Michael Dell and Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser. Newsweek said the guest list underscored the focus on technology competition, microchips and artificial intelligence. It said Xi thanked the Trumps for their hospitality and described the moment as a historic juncture in the relationship, and that Trump went off script during the dinner and invited guests to tour the construction site of the White House ballroom.

Newsweek reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced large demonstrations in New York City ahead of his address to the United Nations General Assembly, with actress Susan Sarandon and comedian Caleb Hearon among those detained by police. It said the walkout was meant to rebuke him, but Netanyahu turned the spectacle into evidence that Israel is standing alone against a hostile world.

Newsweek also reported that James "Jim" Copenhaver, one of two people critically wounded when a gunman opened fire at Trump's 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died. It said he was 76 and that a family statement released through an attorney said he died Wednesday surrounded by loved ones without giving a cause of death. Newsweek said Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed in the shooting and that the attack prompted intense scrutiny of the security operation surrounding the rally.

Newsweek reported that the Trump administration appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court over its ability to deport immigrants to countries that are not their home nation. It said the Justice Department argued in a 45-page appeal that a lower court ruling led to canceled removal flights, leaving more than 1,400 illegal immigrants in the U.S. and facing potential release from custody. Newsweek said the court will now decide whether to take the case.
