PolitiFact is reporting that Florida Republican gubernatorial nominee U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds' claim linking U.S. measles outbreaks to illegal immigration is false. It said Donalds asserted on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that rampant illegal immigration from the previous administration caused outbreaks in places like El Paso, Texas, and southwest Florida, citing unvaccinated individuals. PolitiFact found no evidence to support this link. It said infectious disease experts indicate that a decline in measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations in the U.S. is the primary driver of current outbreaks, with approximately 94% of 2026 confirmed cases involving unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. PolitiFact also noted that the claim of 10 million illegal immigrants entering during the Biden presidency is inaccurate.
PolitiFact is also reporting that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has agreed to a legal settlement with 51 states and territories, totaling up to $17.1 billion in penalties and implementing restrictions for young users. It said the settlement, which follows a 2023 lawsuit and a recent trial, addresses concerns that Meta targeted underage users to maximize platform use, negatively impacting teens' mental and physical health. PolitiFact noted that state attorneys general highlighted harmful app features like body-altering filters and disruptive notifications. A separate settlement with Texas brings the total closer to $18 billion.
