The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local Social Security offices, card centers and hearing offices in Hawaii has changed.

In a notice to the public, the agency directed Hawaii residents to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting.

The agency also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the agency said.

Online services highlighted by the Social Security Administration include reviewing your latest Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.

People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, and appeal a medical decision.

Account management tools allow users to change an address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099.

The agency also pointed to its FAQs and online options for requesting a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account to access benefits information.
