The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has reiterated its demand for the immediate release of Milwaukee Muslim community leader Salah Sarsour from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention, citing reports of medical neglect and deteriorating health. Sarsour, who was detained in March, is allegedly being denied adequate medical care despite serious concerns, according to his attorneys.
Reports from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and TMJ4 detail Sarsour's worsening health conditions while in ICE custody. CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad expressed deep alarm over the situation.
"The reported neglect of Salah Sarsour's medical needs in ICE detention is deeply alarming and unacceptable," Awad said. "No one should be forced to suffer declining health while being unjustly held in immigration detention, especially a respected community leader who poses no threat to anyone."
Awad further called on the Trump administration to immediately release Sarsour and ensure all individuals in immigration custody receive appropriate medical care and humane treatment. He added that Sarsour's continued detention raises serious concerns about due process, civil liberties, and the targeting of community leaders.
