The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Georgia has changed, and it is directing beneficiaries to check the current status of their location before visiting.

In a notice to recipients, the agency said many tasks can be handled without visiting an office, pointing to its online services as an alternative.

"Check Status," the notice said, linking recipients to the agency's emergency and office status page for Georgia.

The agency highlighted a range of popular online services, including reviewing a latest Social Security statement, checking an earnings history, estimating retirement benefits and checking the status of an application or appeal.

Beneficiaries can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, and appeal a medical decision through the agency's website.

For account management, the agency listed changing an address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing a 1099 form as tasks available online.

Help and answers are also available online, including the agency's frequently asked questions, requests for a replacement Medicare card and requests for a replacement Social Security card.

The agency encouraged recipients to "Go Digital!" and create a personal my Social Security account, saying millions of people already use the service to access their benefits.
