The City of Fairfax has initiated construction on the Blenheim Boulevard multimodal improvements project, which will lead to single-lane closures and expected traffic delays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Westbound Blenheim Boulevard will be closed August 5-6 for tree removal, with the eastbound lane closing August 6-7. Further westbound closures are anticipated the week of August 10 for trenching and duct bank construction. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and heed flaggers.
In other transportation news, the city is halfway through installing hi-vis backplates at 36 traffic signal locations. This $100,000 project, funded by VDOT's Virginia Highway Safety Improvement Program, enhances signal visibility, particularly during power outages or adverse weather conditions, and helps drivers distinguish signals from background distractions.
Two new road networks are now open to traffic: the Government Center Parkway Extension and the Northfax West Road Network (Farr Avenue and Northfax Street). Ribbon-cutting ceremonies are scheduled for September 10 and September 24, respectively, to celebrate these new connections, which were funded by VDOT and the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority.
Additionally, a roadway safety evaluation of Pickett Road, between Main Street and Route 50, is underway. A community meeting will be held on September 16 at Historic Blenheim to gather public input for the safety audit. For the 50th Annual Fall Festival on October 10, a free Bike Valet service will be available to encourage cycling and alleviate parking concerns.
