Fairfax County Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Thursday evening in Merrifield, resulting in the death of 68-year-old Jose Sorto Medrano of Annandale. The incident took place around 8:53 p.m. on June 18 at the intersection of Gallows Road and Strawberry Lane.
Detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) determined that Sorto Medrano was crossing Gallows Road outside of a designated crosswalk when he was struck by a southbound 2022 BMW X5. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene following the collision.
Preliminary findings indicate that speed and alcohol were not factors for the driver. However, alcohol is believed to have been a factor for the pedestrian. Victim specialists have been assigned to support Sorto Medrano's family.
