The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer for Ulises Raigoza-Martinez, an illegal alien convicted of murder in the 2024 killing of Nashville restaurant owner Matt Carney. Raigoza-Martinez recently pleaded guilty to murder and other charges, receiving a 20-year prison sentence.
The incident occurred on June 19, 2024, when Raigoza-Martinez, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, attempted to steal tools from Matt Carney's pickup truck in the parking lot of Smokin' Thighs restaurant. When Carney, 42, confronted him, Raigoza-Martinez fled, striking Carney with his vehicle. Carney was thrown from the hood during a turn and later died from his injuries on July 4, 2024.
Police arrested Raigoza-Martinez in South Nashville on July 18. On July 22, 2026, he pleaded guilty to murder, theft over $10,000, tampering with evidence, and theft over $2,500. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said, "This criminal illegal alien pleaded guilty to murder, theft, and tampering with evidence after he ran over and killed Matt Carney in Nashville, Tennessee. This criminal illegal alien should NEVER have been in our country to commit this heinous murder."
