The DC Special Education Hub is hosting an online training session today, "IEP v. 504 Plan: Which is Right for my Child?", to help families understand the differences between Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans.
The session will cover important topics including identifying steps for student eligibility for special education services, exploring available support options for students with disabilities, and outlining next steps if families disagree with an evaluation or eligibility determination. This training is part of the Family Empowerment Series, designed to equip caregivers with knowledge for informed decision-making.
Families can also access a series of six dynamic videos on Special Education in DC on the Hub's YouTube page, available in English and Spanish with open captioning. The Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education, which oversees the Hub, provides independent assistance to families and schools in DC for resolving education-related complaints and conflicts.
The Hub is preparing its 2026-2027 training calendar, continuing to offer sessions in Spanish and providing one-on-one support to help families navigate special education challenges, always prioritizing students' best interests.
