Gov. Andy Beshear, joined by former Gov. Steve Beshear and other local, state, and federal officials, today celebrated the completion of the Wolfe County segment of the Mountain Parkway Expansion. This milestone delivers 32 continuous miles of four-lane highway, significantly enhancing connectivity for Eastern Kentucky residents and businesses.
This nearly $100 million investment, which included a $55 million federal Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant secured in 2020, involved widening an 11-mile section from Campton to Helechawa. The project also included the reconstruction of the Kentucky Highway 191/Campton (Exit 46) and Kentucky Highway 1010/Hazel Green (Exit 53) interchanges, marking the last of five segments to widen the original two-lane parkway between Campton and Salyersville.
“Team Kentucky is proud to mark another milestone in this project that Kentuckians have been waiting half a century to see come to life,” Gov. Beshear said. “This took a tremendous amount of work, and the end result means we have taken another step forward in making it safer, easier and faster for families to live, learn, work and connect across Eastern Kentucky.”
With the Wolfe County section now complete, only the sixth and final segment of the Mountain Parkway Expansion remains. This 13-mile Magoffin-Floyd segment, an all-new cross-country piece, will provide a four-lane connection from Salyersville to Kentucky Highway 114 near Prestonsburg. Construction on this segment, one of the commonwealth’s largest excavation projects, will continue for several more years to fully complete the 45-mile expansion, closing the last gap in a 400-mile corridor across Kentucky.
