Governor Mikie Sherrill announced a historic multistate settlement with Meta, calling it a "major victory for New Jersey families" and a step towards holding "Big Tech" accountable for harm to children's mental health and safety. The agreement includes groundbreaking new safety features to protect kids online.
Sherrill, a mother of four, highlighted her firsthand experience with social media's impact. She noted that last month, she signed "the strongest laws in the nation" to limit how and when these companies can reach children online. The lawsuit, which New Jersey's Attorney General helped lead, aims to end the "addiction that the technology companies are pushing on kids for profit."
The settlement will bring "more than $500 million to New Jersey to continue the fight." Governor Sherrill affirmed her commitment, saying, "I'll will keep working to ensure New Jersey is a place where kids and parents can feel secure knowing that we have their backs in this fight."
