The U.S. Department of War today announced the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil, integrating advanced artificial intelligence capabilities into its GenAI.mil platform. This deployment marks a significant step in the Department's enterprise partnership with OpenAI, established in 2025, bringing a secure and tailored AI experience to military operations.
Accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5), ChatGPT Mil is designed for secure, consistent enterprise use across the Department. It offers a familiar commercial interface with features like chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, specifically adapted to meet warfighter needs.
This new AI tool will support document-heavy unclassified work, including planning, policy, logistics, and administration, for more than 3 million Department personnel. By accelerating routine tasks, ChatGPT Mil aims to free up valuable time for more critical projects across the Joint Force, enhancing efficiency and operational readiness.
The integration of ChatGPT Mil into GenAI.mil, alongside existing frontier AI capabilities, establishes a robust, multi-model ecosystem. The Department, through its Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) and the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, plans to continue scaling frontier AI as a force multiplier, supporting the White House's AI Action Plan and reinforcing its commitment to AI adoption for warfighter mission sets and decision superiority.
