University of Pennsylvania researchers have developed a novel cement-based tile inspired by the skin of African elephants, designed to naturally cool urban environments. This innovative material captures and slowly evaporates water, effectively lowering surface temperatures without the need for conventional air conditioning systems.

The design is the result of a collaboration between architect Dorit Aviv and materials scientist Shu Yang. Their nature-informed approach aims to address the challenge of rising urban temperatures and the significant energy consumption associated with traditional cooling methods.
