The university hosted a Virginia 250 panel, "The Complex Legacy of George Mason," where leaders examined the founding father's contradictions as an author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights and a slaveholder. Additionally, scholars from the Center for Mason Legacies contributed to Fairfax 250 history day, sharing insights on 'Revolutionary Ideas' as part of the statewide semiquincentennial commemoration.
Mason Arts will present America250 programming this fall across its Northern Virginia campuses, featuring fine art exhibitions by veterans through early December and two free U.S. Army Bands concerts at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Beyond historical commemorations, the university invites the Mason Nation to a D.C. United soccer match on August 1 at Audi Field, offering discounted tickets.
Academic opportunities are also highlighted, with a $500 Faculty and Staff Book Scholarship available for George Mason courses, with applications due by July 6. Furthermore, the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning will host a Zoom workshop on August 11, addressing key considerations for faculty regarding AI in the classroom. The university also celebrated 13 members of its rowing team who achieved Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete status, setting a new record.
