Auditors from the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS OIG) have revealed that six North Carolina post offices remain suspended nearly two years after Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused widespread disruption in Fall 2024.
The 2024 hurricanes initially impacted 240 post offices in the North Carolina District, leading to temporary closures and service relocations. Extensive damage to buildings or communities, along with pending repairs, leasing decisions, and operational determinations, have delayed the reopening, permanent closure, or relocation of these six facilities.
The USPS OIG report identified opportunities for the Postal Service to improve its lease payment process. Auditors found that the USPS could reduce the risk of unnecessary payments and recover nearly $43,000 in lease payments on these properties.
