Jeffrey Popp, director of restoration at Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy, said that while individual rain gardens may not prevent large-scale flash flooding, "if everybody had a rain garden in their front yard, it could have a significant impact." It is crucial that rain gardens drain within a day or two to prevent mosquito breeding and should not be placed within 10 feet of a house foundation. They are most effective in sandy or silty soils.
