Scientists are sounding the alarm about a developing El Niño pattern, which is anticipated to bring a surge of extreme weather across the United States, including severe flooding, increased drought, and heightened wildfire risks. Researchers warn that these conditions could make the upcoming months particularly dangerous, building on a trend of climate disasters that are growing more frequent and severe each year.
According to the Sierra Club, the Trump administration is actively defunding and dismantling critical disaster response agencies, rather than bolstering protections. The organization claims the administration has "gutted" the National Weather Service, "undermined" the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and "fired thousands of workers" at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These actions, the Sierra Club asserts, will result in slower warnings, fewer evacuations, and an increased risk to human lives.
The environmental group is urging public action to counter these measures. "If enough of us speak up, we can defend weather prediction and disaster aid for every community!" the Sierra Club said, highlighting the need for collective effort to safeguard essential services for disaster preparedness and response. The organization also points to broader environmental concerns, including plans for a lease sale in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for fossil fuel companies and a federal transportation bill that lacks provisions for cleaner energy solutions.
