Governor Mike Dunleavy announced today the establishment of the Alaska Military Affairs Office (AMAO) within the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). This new state entity is dedicated to advancing Alaska's strategic role in national defense, strengthening military partnerships, and fostering economic opportunity.
The AMAO will serve as the central coordinating body for military affairs, ensuring Alaska remains the nation's most capable and competitive location for current and future defense missions. Governor Dunleavy said, "Alaska has never been more strategically important to our nation's security than it is today."
He added that the office demonstrates a commitment to protecting and expanding military presence, preparing communities, infrastructure, and industries to support national defense missions. This initiative will strengthen coordination across state government and help position Alaska for continued military investment and economic growth.
Alaska's unique geographic position at the crossroads of the Arctic, Indo-Pacific, and North American homeland makes it increasingly vital for national defense. Supported by a grant from the Department of War, Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC), the AMAO will collaborate with various partners, including federal agencies, local governments, and Alaska Native organizations, to advance statewide military priorities and improve quality of life for service members and families.
