The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) is deploying targeted patrols and coordinating with regional partners to address these trends, which typically see an uptick during warmer months due to increased activity.
Residents are encouraged to take practical steps to deter criminal behavior, including consistently locking vehicles and removing valuables from sight. Securing doors, windows, and garages, even when at home, is crucial, as is utilizing outside or motion-activated lighting. The FCPD also advises residents to foster neighborhood connections, watch out for one another's homes, and report any suspicious activity immediately to law enforcement.
Vehicle theft remains a significant concern, despite a notable decrease in Fairfax County, with 282 vehicles stolen year-to-date in 2026 compared to 445 in 2025. This reduction is attributed to enhanced vehicle security and improved law enforcement capabilities like license plate readers and the Real-time Crime Center. However, 47 of these thefts occurred in the Franconia Police District, often involving unlocked vehicles, keys left inside, or cars left running. Owners of 2011-2022 Hyundai and Kia models with "turn key to start" ignitions are particularly advised to get available software updates and practice heightened security due to known vulnerabilities.
