Governor Ned Lamont has applauded the Connecticut General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee for unanimously approving his nomination of Connecticut Appellate Court Chief Judge Melanie L. Cradle to serve on the Connecticut Supreme Court.
This historic vote marks the first time a Black woman has been confirmed to serve on the state’s highest court. Governor Lamont said, “Today marks an important—and long overdue—milestone as Melanie Cradle becomes the first Black woman ever to be confirmed to serve on the Connecticut Supreme Court.” He added that Judge Cradle has served the state’s courts with “professionalism, impartiality, and integrity” for over a decade.
Judge Cradle will fill the seat vacated by Justice Joan K. Alexander, who resigned to become Connecticut’s chief court administrator. Following the 37-0 committee vote, Judge Cradle can begin serving in an interim capacity, with the full General Assembly expected to vote on her nomination during the 2027 regular session.
Additionally, the Judiciary Committee also approved Governor Lamont’s nomination of Superior Court Judge W. Glen Pierson to the Appellate Court, filling the vacancy created by Judge Cradle’s elevation.
