Three inmates have been federally charged following a brutal 22-second assault on a correction officer at the Doña Ana County Detention Center in New Mexico. The officer, who was assisting the U.S. Marshals Service, was beaten unconscious and tased during the attack on May 11, 2026.
According to court documents, inmates Juan Gabriel Torres, Sergio Seanez, and Titus Josiah McGaw Bulger confronted the officer, identified as John Doe, on the second floor where they were not permitted. Torres initiated the assault, followed by Seanez and Bulger, who punched, kicked, and stomped the officer until he lost consciousness. Torres then used the officer's taser on his unconscious body. The attack involved approximately 30 punches and 15 kicks before additional guards intervened.
The officer survived the attack and regained consciousness after receiving medical care. Torres, Seanez, and Bulger face charges of assault involving a dangerous weapon and inflicting bodily injury on a person assisting officers of the United States. If convicted, they could each face up to 20 years in prison. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and FBI Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris announced the charges. The FBI's Las Cruces Resident Agency led the investigation with support from the Doña Ana County Detention Center, U.S. Marshals Service, and Las Cruces Police Department. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
