The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) San Juan Field Office announced the arrest of Jan Carlos Correa-Tavarez for attempting to smuggle Suboxone into the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Guaynabo. Suboxone is a prescription medication used to treat opioid addiction.
Correa-Tavarez, identified as the nephew of a current MDC inmate, was apprehended by MDC security personnel on June 27, 2026, while trying to introduce the contraband into the facility's visiting area. MDC staff immediately intervened, separated him, and alerted law enforcement authorities.
FBI special agents responded to the detention center, coordinating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico to make the arrest and file a federal complaint before a United States magistrate judge.
Special Agent in Charge Carlos R. Goris of the FBI San Juan Field Office emphasized the gravity of the offense, saying, “Introduction of contraband into a federal detention center is a serious violation that threatens the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and its inmates.” He added, “We are committed to working with our federal partners to ensure that those who engage in criminal activity within the prison system are held accountable.” The case is currently being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico.
