FEMA has approved California's request to extend critical disaster assistance for survivors of last year's devastating fires in Los Angeles, Malibu, and Pasadena, following sustained advocacy from state, local, and federal leaders.
This extension provides continued federal housing support through the Individuals and Households Program (IHP), with assistance for eligible homeowners now available until July 9, 2027, and for eligible renters until October 9, 2026. The decision addresses ongoing challenges faced by survivors, including prolonged displacement, insurance delays, underinsurance, contractor shortages, and housing constraints.
Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the importance of the extension, saying, "Recovery doesn't end when the headlines fade. Thousands of Los Angeles families are still working to rebuild their homes and their lives, and this extension will help ensure survivors continue receiving the support they need during this critical phase of recovery." He added gratitude that FEMA "listened to the concerns raised by survivors, local communities, and advocates across California."
State and local officials echoed this sentiment. Senate President pro Tempore Monique Limón called it "a sigh of relief for thousands of homeowners and renters," while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed gratitude for FEMA's approval, noting that "Palisadians continue to face significant financial hardship, and this support will help ease the burden."
Congressional representatives also highlighted the continued need. Rep. Judy Chu said the extension "will ensure that homeowners and renters have the financial and housing support they need during their recovery," and Rep. Brad Sherman noted that "recovery from the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires is ongoing." Department of Angels Director Christine Kwon underscored that "two in three survivors remain displaced, facing significant financial gaps and uncertainty about the future," emphasizing the need for continued partnership across all levels of government.
