The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is urging taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2025 federal tax returns to do so promptly, rather than waiting until the October 15 deadline. The agency highlighted that IRS Free File remains available until this date, offering free guided tax preparation.

Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $89,000 or less in 2025 can use IRS Free File to securely prepare and e-file their federal returns at no cost through trusted partners. For those with income above this threshold, Free File Fillable Forms are available for self-preparation.

Filing over the summer helps taxpayers avoid the fall rush, allowing more time to resolve potential issues or arrange payments. The IRS reminded filers that an extension provides more time to file, not to pay, and encouraged those who owe tax to pay as much as possible quickly to limit penalties and interest. Electronic filing and direct deposit can also speed up refund processing.
