The Social Security Administration said the operational status of its local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Wisconsin has changed.

In a notice to the public, the agency directed Wisconsin residents to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting.

The agency also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that much of its business can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the agency said.

The Social Security Administration listed a range of popular online services, including reviewing your latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits and checking the status of an application.

People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, and appeal a medical decision.

Account management services available online include changing your address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing your 1099.

The agency said users can find help and answers online, including through its frequently asked questions, and can request a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account, joining the millions of people who use it to access their benefits.
