The U.S. Coast Guard has finalized two significant contracts for the construction of six new Arctic Security Cutters (ASCs), a move designed to significantly enhance America's presence and capabilities in the Arctic region. These polar icebreakers are crucial for national security and sovereignty.
Bollinger Shipyards Lockport, L.L.C. in Louisiana secured a contract worth approximately $2.2 billion for four ASCs, while Rauma Marine Constructions Oy of Finland was awarded approximately $1.1 billion for two ASCs. The first vessel is slated for delivery in 2028, with all six expected to be operational by 2031.
Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin emphasized the importance of this investment, saying, "America’s future in the Arctic demands strength, capability, and resolve. I want to thank President Trump for his bold leadership and vision in directing this critical investment that made these icebreakers possible." Admiral Kevin E. Lunday, commandant of the Coast Guard, added that the cutters "will deliver the essential capability to uphold U.S. sovereignty against adversaries’ aggressive economic and military actions in the Arctic."
The ASC program is a cornerstone of the Coast Guard’s strategy to defend U.S. sovereignty, secure critical shipping lanes, protect energy and mineral resources, and counter adversary presence. Funded by the historic Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Reconciliation, which provided $25 billion, the Coast Guard has already committed over $10 billion to new assets. This initiative fulfills President Donald J. Trump’s promise to expand the Nation’s Arctic fleet to 11 ASCs.
