The Arlington County Board has directed the County Manager to release video of the May 8 police-involved shooting that resulted in the death of Mr. Shawn Valn by or before Friday, October 16.
The Board said the direction reinforces its commitment to transparency, accountability, and public trust, and comes in full respect of the ongoing criminal investigation and any subsequent administrative investigations that may arise.
The County Manager and public safety staff are actively working with a third-party specialist to prepare a video package that clearly depicts the key events and timeline of the incident. Should the footage not be available by October 16, the County Manager and Chief of Police will provide a public update on the status of the release at the October 17 Regular Board meeting.
The County Manager will also provide a public update on the Arlington County Police Department's Directive on Release of Information, which covers the release of body-worn camera footage. The Chief of Police will publish a draft of this document for public feedback.
The Office of the Independent Policing Auditor is being and will continue to be consulted on this document prior to its adoption.
