The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in New Jersey has changed.

In a notice to recipients, the agency directed the public to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting. It did not specify the nature of the change or which locations are affected.

The agency also reminded the public that many services can be handled online, without visiting an office. "You may not need to visit an office," the notice said. "Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?"

Online services highlighted by the agency include reviewing a latest Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal. Users can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision.

Account management tools allow people to change their address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099. The agency also offers online help for reviewing frequently asked questions and requesting replacement Medicare or Social Security cards.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account to access benefits information.
