The update covered job creation, a concerning measles outbreak, enhanced school security, new law enforcement resources, and efforts to combat the overdose crisis.
In economic news, MegaFit Meals is expanding its Marshall County operations with a $9.25 million investment, creating 40 new jobs. Freeman Automation also announced a $1 million expansion in Graves County, adding 20 jobs. Concurrently, Dr. Steven Stack, secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, reported 25 confirmed measles cases in Kentucky, primarily in unvaccinated communities, bringing the 2026 total to 29 cases—the highest since 1991. Dr. Stack emphasized the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine, noting over 250 doses administered in affected counties since August 16. "Although this outbreak raises concerns about the spread of serious illness, public messaging emphasizing the importance and effectiveness of vaccinations appears to be working," said Dr. Stack.
Public safety saw improvements with 937 school resource officers now protecting public school campuses, an increase of nearly 100 from the previous year, and a 130% rise since Governor Beshear took office. The Kentucky State Police also acquired a new 23-foot Metal Shark 23 Relentless patrol boat, funded by a FEMA grant, to enhance water-based emergency response. Governor Beshear recognized August 31 as Overdose Awareness Day, noting four consecutive years of decreasing overdose deaths, including a 22.9% reduction in 2025, the lowest since 2014.
