George Mason University is set to host the first open-architecture quantum computing system in Virginia, a collaboration with Oxford-based TreQ. This system, backed by a $7.7 million investment including strategic support from VIPC and TreQ, marks the first U.S. deployment of TreQ's proprietary Open Architecture Quantum framework and is planned for installation in 2027 on one of Mason's Northern Virginia campuses.
In other developments, George Mason social work researcher Melissa Villodas and her team have analyzed 16 enacted laws across 10 states to better understand how legislation can make social media safer for young people. Their research aims to inform strategies for online youth protection.
The university also continues to advance 21st-century education through various programs. Bioengineering senior Meriam Belainass completed a summer internship at Clinique Al Madina in Casablanca, Morocco, gaining valuable experience. Additionally, George Mason's summer programs are designed to open doors for students to explore and develop skills, preparing them for future challenges.
