Mayor Bass to Sign MOU for Vincent Thomas Bridge Future

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will join state and local leaders to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Thursday, July 30, initiating a planning effort to address the future of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, a critical transportation asset at the Port of Los Angeles.

The bridge currently prevents larger, more fuel-efficient container ships from accessing approximately 40% of the Port's container terminal capacity located north of the bridge. This constraint impacts the Port's ability to remain competitive in global trade.

The MOU, signed by the Port of Los Angeles, the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), will evaluate long-term options for replacing or modifying the bridge. The goal is to improve freight mobility and support jobs as the international shipping industry evolves.
