SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom today issued a statement mourning the passing of legendary singer-songwriter, actress, and philanthropist Dolly Parton. The couple praised Parton's immense contributions to music and her extensive philanthropic efforts.
"Dolly was larger than life. She was a phenomenal talent and a prolific singer-songwriter, writing and performing songs that have become synonymous with American culture," Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom said. They noted her status as the best-selling female country music artist of all time, emphasizing her pride in her roots and how her upbringing inspired her music and philanthropy.
The statement continued, "The only thing bigger than her hair was her heart." They recognized Parton's advocacy, including challenging double standards for women, supporting communities of color, and being a vocal ally to the LGBTQ community, notably through the Dollywood Foundation's work against HIV and AIDS. Her dedication to early literacy, inspired by her father, also brought a love of reading to millions globally, including many in California.
The Newsoms concluded, "The world will be less sparkly without Dolly, but the joy she brought and the stories she shared will shine for generations."
